Rawalpindi: Asif Javed Azeemi, through his artwork, tries to explore ‘sufism’ and spirituality, which have deep roots in our culture through ages.
Generally each and every verse of a ‘sufi’ poet has dual meaning, one for the common masses just to understand what seems to be on the surface and one for others who try to explore the depth of the mystical meanings hidden in them.
These great ‘sufi’ poets were highly intellectual souls, who wanted to give the message of love to humanity through their poetry.
Asif Javed Azeemi follows the thread of ‘sufism’ and considers Khwaja Shamsuddin Azeemi as his spiritual leader. He has painted the portraits of different ‘sufi’ poets.
“I have a special inclination towards spiritualism and I don’t think I can do anything else than this. This is my passion and this is my forte. Artists play with colours, but my portraits are done in black and white, which is only pencil work that gives them grace and poise. The unique thing about my work is that my work is not taught in any institution and it does not need any colour because it is done with carbon dust and with fixation spray for longer life,” Asif explained.
This was Javed’s first solo exhibition, which was inaugurated at Rawalpindi Arts Council here Tuesday.
The exhibition was inaugurated by Commissioner Zahid Saeed. He said that the Rawalpindi Arts Council is promoting budding artists and providing a platform to showcase their work. This gives them encouragement and they can later go to high-profile places for their exhibitions. He admired Javed’s work, which was done with a unique technique.
The commissioner said that a new art gallery is being constructed beside Rawalpindi Arts Council and it will be completed shortly. “We will definitely be able to attract more artists once the art gallery is completed with all facilities,” he said.
The exhibition has also showcased books on ‘sufism’ by Professor Saeed Ahmed.
He has written many books on Baba Farid, Sultan Bahu, Bulleh Shah, Waris Shah, Mian Mohammad, Shah Hussain and Khwaja Ghulam Farid among others.
