Irene Mélikoff, a renowned Azerbaijani scientist living in France, has passed away. She was 91 years old. Melikoff received treatment at Strasbourg Hospital in recent months, the Azerbaijan State Committee for the Diaspora said on Jan. 9.
Mélikoff was born in St. Petersburg in 1917. She majored in Eastern languages at Sorbonne University.
During her career, Mélikoff chaired the Institute of Iranian and Turkic Studies at Strasbourg University and co-founded the TURCICA editions. She also held many other leading positions in her field.
Mélikoff is the author of “Umur Pasha Dastani,” “Melik Danishmend,” “Ebi Muslim Khorasani,” “In the Tracks of Turkish Sufism,” and other books.
Mélikoff received an honorary doctorate from Baku State University. She was awarded numerous other honors for her scientific contributions.
