Algérie: 4e colloque maghrébin sur les manuscrits du fiq'h et du soufisme à Oran

Manuscripts about Sufism and Fiq’h were the topic of the 4th Maghrebian colloquium organised by the Manuscripts Laboratory of Muslim Civilisation of North Africa --a Dept. of the Human Sciences of Oran University.
The conference was held on December 16-17 2006 in Oran, Algeria, gathering Researchers from Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia and Libya.
The colloquium examined the necessity of collecting and preserving the manuscripts about sufism and fiq’h -thousands and thousands of which are still held by private citizens – through a Maghrebian common data bank and Maghrebian scientific cooperation.
Algeria is pioneer in this field, with its Adrar Centre for manuscripts inventory which relies on the services of two Shaykhs for facilitating contacts among the private citizens and the scientists.
The 5th colloquium –it has been decided- will focus on researches in the field of literature and history.

Mehdi Bouabdelli (1907 - 1992): A Scholar and His Library

Mehdi Bouabdelli, a scholar from modern Algeria
A commemoration of Mehdi Bouabdelli (1907 -1992) born in a family whose lineage goes back to a Saint from Oued Rhiou, the Sufi Sidi Bouabdellah el Moughawfal (known also as Sheykh Iekbir), whose tariqa goes back to the Hafsid dynasty (1229 -1574 CE).
His whole work was dedicated to the knowledge and research of the Algerian and, by extension, Maghrebian personality while unearthing manuscripts of works of the past fallen in the collective lapse of memory.
After independence, he put his phenomenal knowledge at service of the Research Centre while taking part in several seminars worldwide and while contributing to the National Center for Historical Studies.
He published «Taghr el djouman fi ibtissam etaghr el wahrani » by Ahmed Ben Mohamed Errachidi (end of 18th century) in 1973 and « Dalil el hayran oua anis essahran fi madinet wahran» by Mohamed Benyoucef Ziani in 1978.
Mehdi Bouabdelli received a PhD Honoris causa from Oran University shortly before passing away.
What is required now is to enhance the library which he left.

The safeguarding of the Manuscript is Everybody's concern

«La préservation du manuscrit est l'affaire de tous et nécessite une réflexion pour l'élaboration d'un programme national ambitieux qui garantit l'inventaire, la restauration et la conservation de ce patrimoine», a déclaré récemment le directeur de la culture de la wilaya de Tindouf à l'occasion de «Maoussem cheikh Mohamed Mokhtar Belaameche» [traditional event].

“The safeguarding of the manuscript is everybody's concern and requires a reflexion for the development of an ambitious national program which will guarantee the inventory, the restoration and the conservation of this inheritance”, declared recently the Cultural Director of the wilaya [province] of Tindouf at “Maoussem sheik Mohamed Mokhtar Belaameche”.
The Cultural Director has, in this context, decided to proceed to the inventory of the manuscripts, preserved in the libraries of the families Ahl El Abed, and Ahl Belaameche, so that they can be used as data bases to the researchers and to students in theology and sciences of Islam.
Let us recall that Algeria recently endowed itself with a Manuscript's National Center in Adrar. In addition, a few days ago, the National Library organized one open day to present competences and existing know-how for the safeguarding of the manuscripts which has become a national priority.
