President Pakistan Muslim League and former Prime Minister Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain has said that promotion of the teachings of Sufi saints can help promote peace and tranquillity in the society and result in accelerating the pace of development. He said this while addressing the first meeting of Council for Promotion of Sufism here Thursday.
The Council meeting was attended by Secretary General PML Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed, Mian Yousaf Sallahuddin, Hameed Haroon, Abbas Sarfraz and Chief Minister Balochistan Jam Yousaf.It was decided that the next meeting of the Council would be chaired by President general Pervez Musharraf as patron-in-chief of the Council.
While addressing the meeting, Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, who is chairman of the Council, said Sufi saints gave us lesson of mutual brotherhood, tolerance and harmony and by following into their footprints a lasting peace can be ensured in the world. He said Pakistan wants peace, therefore, it is extending full cooperation to efforts in this direction.
He said that PML is a national party, which is promoting unity, integrity as well as democratic attitude in the society. He said that seminars, conferences and workshops would be arranged in Pakistan as well as abroad for highlighting the teachings of sufi saints.
He said the Council will also arrange publication of the teachings of sufi saints in different foreign languages besides arranging annual awards for those who will make outstanding contribution towards propagation of the message of love and brotherhood of Sufis and mutual dialogue between scholars of different regional researchers.Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain said Iqbal Festival will be held to project the message of Allama Iqbal on his death anniversary on November 9, this year, while in December a Roomi Festival will be organized.
Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed in his address said sufi music could be used to promote brotherhood, tolerance and mutual understanding among the people particularly the youth.He said interfaith harmony could also be promoted through the promotion of sufism besides better coordination among educational institutions.
Senator Mushahid said Ph.D courses would be started in the universities on the teachings of sufis.
