Pakistan's President requests funds for Rahman Baba’s mausoleum

ISLAMABAD, Feb 13 (Associated Press of Pakistan): President Asif Ali Zardari on Saturday asked the federal government to immediately release the funds for the reconstruction and renovation of the shrine of famous Sufi Pushto poet Rahman Baba in the suburbs of Peshawar. Spokesperson to President former Senator Farhatullah Babar said the President called for meaningful progress on the project ahead of his visit to NWFP, the date for which has not yet been finalized.
Chairing a preparatory meeting the President directed that funds amounting to Rs 39 million for reconstruction and renovation be immediately released.
Farhatullah Babar said the shrine of Rahman Baba was demolished by militants early last year when the extremists were advancing in Swat and Malakand attacking government forces, openly defying the state, burning down schools and publicly beheading those who opposed their ideology.
It was during that period when the militants bombed the shrine warning the people against congregations at the Sufi poet’s mausoleum.
The President had directed that renovation and reconstruction of the Mazar be carried out by the federal government, he said.
