Qadiriyah Flags Off Maulid Celebration in Abeokuta, Nigeria

"Qadiriyah Flags Off Maulid Celebration in Abeokuta" (Nigeria)

Published 4 March 2010, in allAfrica.com , Lagos, Nigeria. The Qadiriyah Sufi Order will on Saturday night flag off their annual Maulid nabiyy celebration in Abeokuta, Ogun State - the first such celebration by the Qadiriyah in the country.

The event of Saturday night is the grand finale of the celebration which usually spans a week, beginning on Monday, March 1, through to Wednesday when Qur'anic graduation ceremonies hold and Friday when dhaakiriina (people versed in the eulogy of the Prophet) drawn from across the country take turns to extol the virtues of the Prophet, his household, companions, and renown Islamic scholars within the Qadiriyah fold. The dhikir session often goes along with the bandiiri drum.

The grand finale is to be attended by Islamic scholars across the country, and features lectures and turbaning ceremony of persons thought to have contributed to Islamic courses. Former Mines and Power Minister, Sharafadeen Tunji Ishola, was turbaned last year, amongst others, by Sheikh Tajudeen Olohungbo, leader of Qadiriyah in Ogun State.

Khalifah Abdurrahman Muhammadu Basheer, leader of Qadiriyah in Sango-Ota and one of the organisers of the Maulid, told Daily Independent that "we celebrate Maulid in remembrance of the Holy Prophet and I wish to inform you that this commemoration of the birth of Prophet Muhammad is not bid'ah. This is an event that features thorough recitation of the Holy Qur'an and conscientious programmes targeted at enlightening the ummah about the significance of the birth and mission of Muhammad. Numerous dhikri and lecture sessions are held to teach the virtues of the Prophet."

Khalifah Abdurrahman said leading Muslim scholars and entrepreneurs are expected at the grand finale, among them the Qadiriyah chief in Nigeria and across the African continent, Sheikh Qariballah Nasirudeen Kabarah; Qadiriyah chief in South-West Nigeria, Sheikh Abdulqadir Ahmad Rufai Nda Salaaty; and several of their lieutenants nationwide.

The Qadiriyah Sufi Order is well-coordinated in Nigeria and has four main centres, each saddled with commemorating different great Islamic events. The Nigerian Qadiriyah headquarters in Kano celebrates the birth of the great scholar and founder of the Sufi Order, Sheikh Abdulqadir Jaelaani; while the Qadiriyah centre in Abeokuta, led by Sheikh Olohungbo, often flags off the Maulid event annual. Ilorin, superintended by Sheikh Salaaty, also celebrates Maulid at a latter date; while the Qadiriyah in Ibadan - of which Khaleefah Muhyideen Najimudeen is the head - organises the annual Hijrah celebration.
