Soul food of the best kind

By Joel Pereira 2006-02-16 Source: Moneycontrol.com

There is so much sound and so much clutter in the music space. So if you want to listen to the grooviest and hippest tracks across genres, then here is what I recommend: reviewed this week is the latest from the late great, sufi singer Pankaj Awasthi.

Pankaj Awasthi is one of the new wave of Indian singers, like Himesh Reshamiya or Kunal Ganjawala, breaking away from nasal, saccharine strains of the previous male vocal favourites like Kumar Sanu or Sonu Nigam.

After feeling some of the success of 'Karam', Pankaj breaks away from the music directors and goes his own way with his solo album, simply titled 'Nine'. The album is an interesting mix of Pankaj's Sufi singing style and a distinctly acid-rock fusion backdrop. All tracks are eminently listenable, but the best are 'Duniya', 'The Last Beat' and the first single, 'Khuda Ka Wasta'.

So what's the verdict on Pankaj Awasthi? I would rate him 3.5 out of 5, and if you're going to buy an Indi pop album this week, this should be it.
