Former Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Dr Abdullah Md Zin has been appointed religious advisor to the prime minister, effective Monday.
Abdullah, 62, who is Besut member of parliament, takes over the post from Tan Sri Dr Abdul Hamid Othman who was appointed to the post in January 2001.
Prior to joining politics in 2004, Abdullah was the Deputy Rector (Academic and Research) of the Islamic University College of Malaysia.
Abdullah, who obtained a Doctor of Philosophy in Islamic missionary and Sufism from the University of Kent, England in 1990, is an Umno Supreme Council member and the deputy chairman of the party's religious bureau.
He obtained his Bachelor's Degree in Usuluddin from Medina University in Saudi Arabia and a Master's Degree in Syariah from the Al-Azhar University in Cairo, Egypt.
