Lucknow: The 625-year-old shrine of famous sufi saint Hazrat Makhdoom Shah Ashrafi will be rightful owner of all the properties of the shrine. In a significant decision, the local body (Town Area) of Kichaucha town in Ambedkarnagar district has turned down the pleas of several persons staking claim over the shrine and its property on grounds of family lineage.
"It is high time that the 625-year-old shrine should be freed from dynastic set-up. No one can claim the property on the basis of pedigree, all the ownership right will rest with the Hazrat Makhdoom Shah only," said Executive Officer (EO), Kichaucha town area, Alok Singh on Tuesday. Singh also stated that family tree cannot be given preference as the shrine is a public property.
The decision came after 19 years when Mohiuddin Ashraf and six others filed a case before the EO staking claim over the shrine and its property. The shrine which attracts lakhs of visitors annually even from abroad is fairly rich with valuable properties in Kichaucha town area of Ambedkarnagar. It has several ponds, gharibkhana, nashistgah, shrine complex, shops, residential complexes and even graveyards.
Several persons claiming to their family lineage with the sufi saint had staked claim over the property. Many properties were even disposed off and even encroached with people citing them as descendants of the sufi saint. Later, when the local administration intervened, a case was filed in 1992 staking claim over the property by Mohiuddin Ashraf and six others.
They claimed that as they belong to the family the property should be rightfully given to them.
"We based our decision on a registered deed dated March 3, 1967 in which Maulana Abdul Hai Ashrafi the then sajjadanashin has expressed desire to make all the property in the name of the shrine. It is public property and few individuals cannot be given right on the basis of their family tree," said EO Alok Singh.
