A Life for Unity
PTI, "Film on Sufi poet's life" - Press Trust of India - New Delhi, India
April, Tuesday 29, 2008
A film has been made on the life of Sufi poet Hazrat Shah Miran, who came from Baghdad to settle in Sibsagar district and whose compositions have a striking similarity with religious songs of Assam's 16th century Vaishnavite saint-scholar Sri Sri Sankar Deb.
Miran, who came to Assam in the 17th century through Ajmer and Delhi, gained popularity in the area.
The feature film `Ajan Fakir Saheb' by director Asif Iqbal Hussain, released recently, traces the life and work of the 'pir' who dedicated his life for unity and friendship among Hindus and Muslims.
His devotional songs were set to local musical genre.
According to Sahitya Akademi awardee Assamese author late Abdul Malik, Miran was a man with profound mastery over the Koran, the Hadithes and Islamic philosophy.
The film depicts how he built a mosque at Chunpora in Sibsagar district and called the faithful to offer prayers five times a day. The azan or call for prayer, unfamiliar in the area, prompted the locals to name him `Ajan Fakir".

I have not seen the film yet; but hope it would still be running, while I visit Assam within few weeks time. I am extremely happy that Director Asif Iqbal Hussain, and his team has made the great effort to immortalize the life and works of a great person, Hazrat Shah Syed Miran (Azan Pir Sahib), who happens to be my 8Xgreat grandfather. His message of love and harmony is so much needed around the World today! Hope the film will achieve success in bringing Unity and Harmony among people.
Peace on Earth!
