Kavita Seth, one of India’s leading Sufiana singers, performed live on January 24 at Mumbai’s Gateway Of India. The concert was organised by the Ministry of Culture, Government of Maharashtra.
She once again performed live on January 25 at the Navi Mumbai Festival in Urban Haat, Belapur. Kavita Seth will highlight Sufi music in the grand finale at the Kala Ghoda Festival at Mumbai’s Asiatic Library on February 15.
Kavita Seth has been trained in Hindustani music and classical music. She has a fresh voice that is uniquely different from various other voices dominating the singing industry. She has taken classical training under the guidance of N.D.Sharma of Gwalior Gharana, Vinod from Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, New Delhi and Ustad Iqbal Ahmed Khan of the Delhi Gharana.
During childhood, she started performing at the Khan-kahe Niyazia Dargah, Bareilly and has performed many musical performances since then. She was declared the Best Singer in Bareilly and received the award at the hands of music maestro O.P. Nayyar. Later, she took part in the first festival Jahan-e-Khusrau , conceived by filmmaker Muzaffar Ali in Delhi in 2002. She had the privilege of singing along with the renowned Sufi singer Abida Parveen of Pakistan in this concert besides rendering solo Sufi numbers.
Kavita recorded her maiden film song Maula in producer Vashu Bhagnani’s Vaada. Nominated for the Best New Voice at the Sahara Sangeet Awards in 2005, she recorded her second number Mujhe mat roko for Gangster. This song was also nominated for the Stardust awards given to fresh musical talent. She has rendered a number for renowned filmmaker N. Chandra’s Yeh Hai India and composer Hamsalekha from the South also gave her a song in the Kannada film Kabaddi.
Kavita has a unique record of performing live in more than 500 shows throughout the world. She has formed her own Karwaan Group, a band of Sufi musicians.
On December 26, a month after the Mumbai terror attacks, she performed live at Mumbai’s Kala Ghoda as a Shradhanjali offering called Ek Shaam Veeron Ka Naam along with leading singers and musicians Pt. Shiv Kumar Sharma, Sonu Niigaam, Talat Aziz, Pankaj Udhas, Shankar Mahadevan, Anup Jalota and Anuradha Paudwal.
