Iran's Society for the Appreciation of Cultural Works and Dignitaries is set to honor the renowned Mowlavi expert, William C. Chittick.

The event, which will be held on June 14, 2008, will mark the American scholar's 65th birth anniversary and honor his life-long efforts to promote Islamic-Iranian studies.

Professor Chittick, who received his PhD in Persian literature from Tehran University, has written and translated twenty-five books and numerous articles on Islamic thought, Sufism, Shiite thought, and Persian literature.

Sufism: A Short Introduction (Oneword, 2000), The Heart of Islamic Philosophy (Oxford University Press, 2001) and The Elixir of the Gnostics (Brigham Young University Press, 2003) are among his recent books.

William C. Chittick is currently a member of the Asian and Asian-American Studies department at the Stony Brook State University of New York.
